Science is a life time mission. I will work, work and work and succeed.
(From Eight point Oath given by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam)
As we now-a-days always talk about profit and loss; so I want to ask a question; what science and technology will give us? The answer of this very question is hidden in this editorial. Friends S&T give us a vision which eliminates all limitations and boundaries and it provides answers to challenging problems and solves mysteries. We have to always remember and take inspiration from some of our old and new jewels like Aryabhata, Bhāskara, Brahmagupta, Varahamihira, Sir CV Raman the discoverer of Raman effect, Chandrasekhar Subramanyam, discoverer of Chandra limit and black hole, Srinivasa Ramanujam the number theory originator.
For illustration, if we take our human body. What is the human body? Science has revealed that the human body is made up of millions and millions of atoms. An average adult weighing 70 kilograms would have approximately 7 atoms, (i.e., 7 followed by 27 zeros). This is divided into 4.7 would be hydrogen atoms, another 1.8 would be oxygen, and there are 7.0 carbon atoms. The difference between one human being and another is determined by the sequencing of the atoms. The recent human genome programme reveals that human genome contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, which lie in the nucleus of every cell in the body. Each chromosome consists of a DNA double helix that is wrapped around spool like proteins called histones. It is estimated that the human body has three hundred thousand to 2 million proteins. The characterization of each protein is the most challenging task, which is carried out by the Human Proteome Project. The unraveling of the genomic mystery will ultimately allow the bio-medical community to create a new evolutionary future for the human race. So far, I have highlighted how the scientific minds have explored space, environment and human biological system.
As time has passed our requirements has increased. To fulfill them we need resources which are available in limited amount. So what we can do now? The best way out is harnessing and utilization of resources be done in more proper manner. For this we need a high class technology. So if we want our nation on world map and if we want to lead then we must have to produce world class technology. It would be accomplished only if each and every people would be literate and be able to use these technologies, it being equally important that all these technologies must reach to our people who are living in very remote areas, usually unaware of the contemporary developments.
World is celebrating this year as International year of Astronomy on the completion of 400 years of Galileo’s remarkable discovery i.e. Telescope. We have to understand the meaning of this. As our population is increasing geometrically day by day, we need more space and more resources. So we must have to acquire distant and different galacticle objects to fulfill them. For this we have to create awareness in people regarding S&T. Preservation and restoration alongside recitations of our old S&T is necessary because they are the foundation stone for our further developments in this area. We have to try to roll S&T in action not only for learned rather a daily or routine commodity for the aloof and veiled.
Discovery in science provides the greatest satisfaction and happiness to the individual scientists. All scientists probably never thought of the magnitude of the application of their discoveries at the time they discovered it. The nuclear energy, light spectroscopy, calculation of the life of the sun, all was understood subsequently due to these scientific discoveries. The science leads to development of technologies. Availability of technologies leads to products. It should be the mission of our budding scientists to see that they make scientific discoveries, which will lay the foundation for future technologies of the country leading to new cost effective products for our billion plus people, and also increasing the wealth of the nation.
